ECU Repair London
MAIL-IN FROM LONDON
A dead or faulty ECU doesn't mean a main dealer, and it doesn't mean driving anywhere. BRS Remapping repairs, tests, clones and programmes engine control units at the bench in Leigh. London customers send the details over on WhatsApp first, find out whether the job can be done, then post the unit in. And if your unit turns out to be healthy, or the fault sits somewhere else entirely, you'll hear that too
ECU Repair, Testing & Cloning Experts in London
ECU Repair
Instead than replacing the whole device and hoping, we replace the specific chip, driver, capacitor or track that has failed, under a microscope. You get your original ECU back with your original data on it, thus there is no need to recode anything at the vehicle
ECU Cloning
Cloning takes the info from your original unit and writes it to a donor This is the approach we travel when a board is too far gone to save. Usually after a fire or long term water damage. With cloning the donor usually ends up carrying your original info so you dont have to reprogram the immobiliser.
ECU Programming and Coding
This is the software side of things, writing a virgin unit to your vehicle, matching a replacement to the immobiliser, updating calibration data or coding a module so the rest of the car recognises it. Many tasks that appear like hardware failures are really a unit that nobody wrote correctly in the first place.
Bench and Boot Mode Programming
Some units won’t speak via the OBD port at all, either because the problem has destroyed communication or because the manufacturer closed them off. We read and write them directly on the bench, or in boot mode, with the board operating off of our own supply. Slower, and often the only route in.
ECU Diagnostics
We test every unit before we fix anything. We run it on a bench rig that duplicates the automobile so we can see the error occur, not assume from a code list. You are informed what is wrong with your unit, whether or not you go forward with the repair.
ECU Faults and Symptoms We Repair
Here's what people describe when they get in touch for common
ECU fault symptoms:
- Engine cranks but won’t start
- Dead dash no connection with diagnostic tool
- Cutting off when driving, then resuming again fine
- The same error number appears again after every repair
- Corrosion, green residue or a wet smell within the housing
- Limp mode that resets with a restart and returns in minutes
- Immobiliser rejecting key that was working yesterday
- The scent of burning or a scorch mark on the board
- Battery flat again and over again in days with no evident depletion
The equipment is dealer-level diagnostic kit and bench testing, used in house rather than farmed out. A repaired or cloned unit can also be remapped while it's with us, so if you were planning ECU remapping and tuning anyway, it's one job instead of two. Our full range of services sets out the rest.
Occasionally, some errors are attributed on the engine ECU that really are in the
body control module. Central locking playing up, lights doing their own thing, windows and wipers acting strangely. If it sounds more like your automobile the BCM problem symptoms list will figure it out fast.

When should my ECU be repaired or replaced?
The vast majority of ECU failures are just a component on the board as opposed to the board itself . Your original unit is more important than you think, since the data on it is already tied to your automobile.

Replacement does win occasionally and it is good being upfront about it. If a board has been under water for months, or a fire has taken the tracks off it, there is nothing left to fix and we will tell you rather than accept your money. Then copying your data to a donor unit is often the superior solution.
| Repair | Replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Quoted per job, and usually well under a main dealer unit | Dealer pricing is the most expensive route, often four figures on a modern car |
| Turnaround | 24 hours when you send both units in | 7 days minimum if we have to source the unit for you |
| Extra work | Rarely needed, your original data stays on the unit | Nearly always needed, the unit has to be matched to the car |
| Original data | Kept, including any tune or learned adaptations | Lost, unless it can be cloned across from your old unit |
How ECU repair works if you are in London
London customers post their ECU to the BRS Remapping workshop in Leigh, where it's bench tested, repaired and sent back. Units already arrive from South Wales, Blackpool and plenty of places in between, so this isn't a service invented for a web page
Get in touch and tell us the vehicle and the fault
If you're in London, you can send photos of the vehicle, the problem and your vehicle reg. Those things tell us which unit you've got, the exact variant and software, and whether posting or a visit makes more sense.
We confirm it is a job for us
Your vehicle reg and photographs get run against what's actually on the bench, and you're told whether the job can be done before anything goes in a box
Take the ECU out and post it in
Plenty of people remove the ECU themselves with a socket set and ten minutes. If yours is buried, any local garage will pull it for you, and that's the realistic route for most London drivers
Bench testing and repair within 24 hours
Bench testing, fault diagnosis, then repair, cloning or programming with a 24 hour turnaround for new and old units. If we source the unit it may take 7 days minimum. Once the work is signed off, the unit goes back to you for refitting.
Back to you, ready to refit
It comes back tested, with your original data intact, and in most cases it bolts straight in with no coding needed at the car. Covered by our 3 month day warranty from the day it's posted back to you.
Areas we service across London
The workshop sits in the North West, and units are posted in from across the country. Once your job is confirmed on WhatsApp or over the phone, you get the exact details for sending it in. That's how a mail-in service works: the job is agreed first, then the unit travels.
