ECU Repair and Testing
MAIL-IN FROM ANYWHERE IN THE UK
A failed ECU rarely means you need a new one. We test, repair and clone engine control units on any make, at component level, on the bench in Leigh. You take the unit out, post it in from wherever you are in the UK, and the car stays where it is. Most repairs are back with you in 24 hours. We'll confirm it's a job for us before you post anything.
ECU Repair, Testing, Cloning, Programming and Coding Experts
Engine ECUs are one part of what we're doing day to day, alongside remapping, module cloning and our full range of ECU Services below:
ECU Repair
Repairs are done at component level. We replace the individual chip, driver, capacitor or track that's failed, under a microscope, instead of swapping the whole unit and hoping. Your original ECU comes back to you with your original data still on it, so there's nothing to recode at the car
ECU Cloning
Cloning copies the data off your original unit and writes it to a donor. It's the route we take when a board is too far gone to save, usually after a fire or long-term water damage. Because the donor ends up carrying your original data, cloning normally avoids the need for immobiliser reprogramming
ECU Programming and Coding
This is the software side: writing a virgin unit to your vehicle, matching a replacement to the immobiliser, updating calibration files, or coding a module so the rest of the car recognises it. A fair number of jobs that look like hardware failures turn out to be a unit nobody coded properly in the first place.
Bench and Boot Mode Programming
Some units won't talk through the OBD port at all, either because the fault has killed communication or because the manufacturer locked them down. We read and write those directly on the bench, or in boot mode, with the board running off our own supply. Slower, and often the only way in
ECU Diagnostics
Every unit gets tested before anything is repaired. We run it on a bench rig that simulates the car, so we can watch the fault happen rather than guess at it from a code list. You're told what's actually wrong with your unit, whether or not you go ahead with the work.
ECU Faults and Symptoms We Repair
Here's what people describe when they get in touch for common
ECU fault symptoms:
- Engine turns over but won't fire
- Dead dash and no communication with a diagnostic tool
- Cutting out while you're driving, then starting again fine
- The same fault code coming back after every repair
- Corrosion, green residue or a damp smell inside the casing
- Limp mode that clears on a restart and returns within minutes
- An immobiliser refusing a key that worked yesterday
- A burnt smell or a scorch mark on the board
- A battery flat within days, over and over, with no obvious drain
One thing worth checking before you go further. Plenty of faults that get blamed on the engine ECU actually sit with the body control module: central locking playing up, lights doing their own thing, windows and wipers behaving oddly. If that sounds closer to your car, the BCM fault symptoms list will sort it out quickly.
If the module turns out to be the body control unit rather than the engine ECU, BCM repair and cloning works the same way.

When should my ECU be repaired or replaced?
The large majority of ECU failures come down to a component on the board rather than the board as a whole, and a component can be replaced. Keeping your original unit matters more than people expect, because the data on it is already married to your car.
Replacement does win sometimes, and it's worth being straight about that. If a board has sat under water for months, or a fire has lifted the tracks off it, there's nothing left to repair and we'll say so rather than take your money. Cloning your data onto a donor unit is usually the better answer in that situation.
| Repair | Replacement | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Quoted per job, and usually well under a main dealer unit | Dealer pricing is the most expensive route, often four figures on a modern car |
| Turnaround | 24 hours when you send both units in | 7 days minimum if we have to source the unit for you |
| Extra work | Rarely needed, your original data stays on the unit | Nearly always needed, the unit has to be matched to the car |
| Original data | Kept, including any tune or learned adaptations | Lost, unless it can be cloned across from your old unit |
How Our Mail-In ECU Repair Works
Posting your ECU in is the best way if you’re not local to us. You take the unit out, we fix it on the bench, it comes back ready to refit. And you'll know it's the right job for us before you spend anything on postage.
Get in touch and tell us the vehicle and the fault
You can send photos of the vehicle, the registration and where you're based to our Whatsapp or email. Those three things tell us which unit you've got, the exact variant and software, and whether posting or a visit makes more sense.
We confirm it is a job for us
We check your fault against our own tooling and come back to you before anything moves. Most are bench jobs, a few have to be done in the car, and if it isn't one for us we'll point you at someone who can do it.
Take the ECU out and post it in
Most people manage the removal themselves with basic hand tools, and any garage will manage the more complex removals. Once the job's agreed we send the postal details and a reference to go in the box.
Bench testing and repair within 24 hours
Your unit goes on the rig so we can reproduce the fault, repair the board at component level and retest it under load. Turnaround is 24 hours when you send both the new and old units in, or 7 days minimum if we have to source a replacement.
Back to you, ready to refit
It comes back tested, with your original data intact, and in most cases it bolts straight in with no coding needed at the car. Covered by our 3 month day warranty from the day it's posted back to you.
Nationwide ECU Repair
across the UK
Your postcode doesn't change the job. The unit comes off the car, travels to the bench in Leigh, and goes back the same way, so a driver in Inverness gets the same process as one in Wigan. Units already reach us from well outside the North West, South Wales and Blackpool among them.
- London and the South East: London, Reading, Brighton, Southampton, Oxford, Milton Keynes and Guildford, plus Kent, Surrey, Essex and Hertfordshire
- South West: Bristol, Plymouth, Exeter, Bournemouth, Swindon and Gloucester, plus Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Cornwall
- Midlands: Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham
- North West: Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Bolton, Wigan, Blackpool, Chester, Cheshire and Lancashire
- Yorkshire and the North East: Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York, Hull, Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough
- Scotland: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen
- Wales: Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Wrexham
- Northern Ireland: Belfast, Londonderry, Lisburn and Newry
One thing worth saying plainly: distance isn't the deciding factor, the job is. Some faults have to be worked on in the vehicle rather than on the bench, and that's true whether you're in Croydon or Carlisle. Send your registration and a couple of photos over first and we'll tell you which one yours is.
