How does EGR delete work?

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) delete is the process of removing the EGR from a vehicle. The EGR system works to send exhaust gases back into the engine which reduces nitric oxide emissions. The EGR valve plays a crucial part in lowering the quantity of dangerous pollutants your engine produces. The EGR valves can get blocked if your car has soot and carbon build up over time.

Over time, carbon deposits accumulate in the intake manifold and EGR valve as a result of the EGR valve's constant recirculation of exhaust gas through the engine. This can often lead to EGR valve failure, warning lights and limp mode in the car, further restricting car performance and power.

At BRS remapping, we carry out full diagnostic EGR checks, cleaning or removal. With some cars, we can perform software modifications to keep the EGR valve closed. This allows the exhaust gases to exit instead of being sent back to the engine. On some occasions we can advise if the EGR should be fully removed

  • Does EGR delete improve fuel economy?

AdBlue delete will cause your vehicle to fail its MOT. This is because UK MOT regulations require all emissions control systems that were fitted by the manufacturer to be present which includes AdBlue for diesel cars. We can locate or recreate a stock map for your particular make and model if a delete was made somewhere else and you don't have the original file, but it requires additional work and may incur an extra cost.

  • What type of cars can get an EGR delete?

An EGR delete can be performed on diesel, petrol and hybrid cars if they use an EGR system.

EGR Delete FAQs

  • How much does it cost to get an EGR delete?

Costs differ depending on the vehicle, engine, and whether you require a complete remove+remap package, cleaning, or part replacement.  Give us your make, model, and year, and we'll provide you with a written quote so you can find out up front how much the EGR removal or remap will cost.

  • Is an EGR delete illegal in the UK?

Adblue delete and removal is illegal in the UK under the UK emissions law. Custom software changes of the AdBlue system are legal in the UK. We only recommend complete AdBlue delete removal for off-road vehicles, or vehicles being exported outside of the EU.

  • Can I pass my MOT with an EGR delete?

Yes we can reverse the AdBlue delete process, since we backup the original ECU settings after any modifications. This allows us to restore the car back to stock settings if needed, hence bringing the AdBlue system back online.

  • Does EGR delete increase miles per gallon (MPG)?

After an EGR removal with a matching remap, some drivers report slight MPG changes, although the outcomes differ greatly depending on the engine, driving style, and load. Any fuel savings must be balanced against increased emissions, potential long-term effects on engine longevity, and potential MOT and insurance problems.
